Desert or Ocean

    The ocean is always free
    No moon encumbrance
    Few grunions running ashore
    Her dark sulky bottom rises.

    Take a cold breath
    Spray of salt.
Is it the edge or beginning
    Home or abyss?

    Black waters ferry the loveless
    To the other side
    And back
    They can’t decide.

    Harbor town waters wash up
    Decades into my sleep
    Fearless dreaming or fog
    That wilts the soul.

    The desert is civil
    Sand is merely hot
    Do animals pray
    Before they eat you?
